Shimajiri Pantoux
Participation Guidelines

Please be sure to read and understand before participating!
Shimajiri Pantoux Satopunaha is a traditional ritual of Miyakojima and Shimajiri that has continued for over a hundred years. The village is expected to be crowded, and selfish behavior may lead to unexpected injuries or accidents. Please use common sense and good manners.

●It is prohibited to bring in clothes or personal belongings that could be a problem if they get muddy or damaged!

This is a traditional ritual in Shimajiri, Miyako Island, where people are smeared with mud by the Pantoux and pray for protection from evil and good health. If you don't want to get dirty, please do not enter. We will not accept any complaints about things being soiled or broken.

●No harming or disrupting Pantoux!

Actions such as challenging a Pantoux to a fight, punching, kicking, hitting, pulling, pushing, grabbing a Pantoux suddenly from behind, or lying down on the road to block its path are prohibited. Pantoux are very heavy, so falling over can cause a serious accident.

●Stop acting selfishly and without consideration for those around you!
Just for the sake of taking photos... I want people to smear mud on you or your children... Please do not push people away or act without consideration for those around you. Please be considerate so that everyone can participate in the Pantoux to the end without getting injured.

●Did you lock your car?
Please make sure your car is locked to avoid unexpected damage such as car break-ins. It's possible that a Pantoux might get into your car and cover the inside in mud...!

●Please refrain from trespassing on houses and rooftops in the village.
The Pantoux's visit is to smear mud on the houses and owners of the village as a ritual. Just because a Pantoux has entered a house does not mean that anyone can enter.

●Let's be very careful to avoid injuries!
The Pantoux performers wear heavy costumes and move unpredictably, creating risks like falls or crowd surges. For your safety, vulnerable visitors including those with infants, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities are strongly advised to avoid crowded areas and exercise extreme caution.

●Please help us by taking your trash home with you!
